MERSEYTRAVEL FAVOURS CAR USERS OVER THE DISABLED AND INFIRM
Merseytravel has prioritised spending £3m on park and ride schemes at stations that do not have disabled access.
Two facilities have been completed at Birkenhead Park and Bidston but are being virtually unused – except for a band of wandering gypsies.
The nicely laid out and landscaped parking areas even have disabled bays – but both stations have footbridge access. This means many people in the socially disadvantaged area such as the disabled, elderly, infirm and mothers with prams cannot board a train at their local station.
The Labour run Merseytravel administration clearly thought spending money on car parks has priority over social inclusion. Although they don’t tell you that on the authority website which is full of access for all mission statements.
They even got the European Regional Development Fund to cough up £1m towards these follies.
To compound matters, the roads around Birkenhead North are packed with cars as usual because people cannot be bothered walking all the way around from the car park.
Shocking waste of money.
