I warned in June that Town Hall officials would not leave the free parking availability at New Brighton to go unchallenged. It didn’t take long. The burghers of Birkenhead are proposing to levy a charge at the large car park in front of Fort Perch rock as part of ongoing cost-cutting measures.
The revival of New Brighton has been a true success story. Until recently it resembled a clapped out old seaside resort a la Rhyl. Now it draws leisure-seekers from far and wide and one of its leading attractions is the fact that it is not infected by the modern blight of enforced parking charges. I knew this situation would have officials and some councillors itching to flex their bureaucratic muscles and add a little touch of misery to the lives of day trippers and probably drive some away.
If not they will be heading for local side streets.
Where next? Try Morrison’s car park.
But all is not lost. These are merely proposals at this stage so let’s hope the public fights back and tells them to get lost.
What say ye now Councillor Davies?
