The Labour-controlled transport authority Merseytravel has raised Mersey tunnel tolls for a second inflation-busting year in a row. Even Labour MPs Frank Field and Angela Eagle begged them not to because of the strain on finances for hard-pressed families. And there is no justification either. The annual income pays for staff, repairs, debt interest and leaves millions left over for the politbureau at Merseytravel to spend how they wish. And my have they spent. Over £70m on failed tram projects, millions more for consultants, a swanky office block and £6.5m on a failed Smartcard scheme.Probably the most financially mismanaged public body since Franz Kafka was in short trousers. They could easily have frozen the toll and still had millions to spare. So much for Ed Milliband bleating about the cost of living – easy to do from the sidelines. Here are Labour representatives with power- and what do they do? Kick the everyday motorist in the cobblers. Shameful. Mind you, blindly voting in this lot, what more do you expect?
