During the election campaign George Osborne said that under a Conservative government the Mersey Tunnel Tolls would “definitely be cut”. In fact he went further and suggested they may be abolished altogether.
The Labour-controlled Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, chaired by Wirral Labour leader Phil Davies has other ideas. They currently decide what fares to charge and are pressing for legislation so that any surpluses – currently around £16m a year – will not be spent on cutting tolls but on any other vanity project they see fit.
Why Davies goes along with this tax on Wirral residents is a mystery. Personally if I was in his constituency I’d be kicking him out.
Since the election not a whimper from Georgie boy. Wonder if he was telling porkies. Or is that just his mate who iikes a bacon roll?
The Liverpool Combined Authority is seeking more devolved powers from the government including the power to spend tunnel surpluses as they see fit.
