President Hollande has come out with the usual battlecries following recent terrorist incidents in France. This means all out war, he declared. The War on Terror has been waged for 15 years and not only has it been unsuccessful, it has stimulated evermore fervent jihadis to join the cause. This is not a war that can be won by carpet bombing or even ‘boots on the ground’. Don’t the politicians realise this, or is it simply what people expect to hear? “There is a dry wind blowing throughout the east and the dry grasses await their spark.” – John Buchan envisaging the conflagration ready to start in the middle-east exactly 100 years ago. Hollande & Co should not be defiant, they should be asking: “What have we done”?
